The Speculator Department Store is one of the oldest continually operating businesses in Speculator, New York. First started in 1949 by Ambrose and Beatrice Mezzano, the business grew over the years with ever-changing selections of clothing, sporting goods, gifts, and even an ice cream shop. With the increase in business came an increase in the building’s size. In 1958 and again in 1963, the building was expanded significantly to the size of the building you see today.
In May of 2003, the store was purchased by Dean Lane and his son Jonathan. Since Dean’s passing in 2013, Jonathan has continued operations using as much of the old wisdom that made it successful, including bringing back the Pendleton Woolen Mills clothing line that helped play a major part in its success over the years. Other brand names carried are Carhartt, Patagonia, and Minnetonka. Of course the Speculator Department Store continues to carry many fine gifts, jewelry, novelties, and sporting goods to round out its offerings.
