The Speculator Department Store is one of the oldest continually operating businesses in Speculator, New York. First started in 1949 by Ambrose and Beatrice Mezzano, the business grew over the years with an ever-changing selections of clothing, sporting goods, gifts, and even an ice cream shop. With the increase in business came an increase in the building’s size. In May of 2003, the store was purchased by Dean Lane and his son Jonathan. Since Dean’s passing in 2013, Jonathan has continued the store’s operations. Jonathan is committed to using as much of the old wisdom that his father used to make it a successful retail store. This includes bringing back the Pendleton Woolen Mills clothing line that helped play a major part in the store’s success over the years.  Other quality brand names that the store carries includes Carhartt, Patagonia, and Minnetonka.  Of course, the Speculator Department Store continues to carry many fine gifts, jewelry, novelties, and sporting goods that are a convenience to the locals and the seasonal visitors.
